La Saboteuse (2017) is an intoxicating, psychedelic blend of contemporary British jazz and rich, hypnotic Middle Eastern folk traditions, a sound Yazz Ahmed terms "psychedelic Arabic jazz." Anchored by Ahmed’s quarter-tone flugelhorn and trumpet—which fluidly glides through microtonal Arab scales (maqamat)—the album layers swirling, delay-drenched horn textures over undulating, trance-like basslines and complex, syncopated rhythms. Ambient synth swells, shimmering vibraphone, and traditional Arabic percussion like the darbuka and riq interweave with modal post-bop grooves, creating an atmospheric, desert-noir soundscape that feels deeply mystical, cinematic, and rhythmically hypnotic.
