Nguyên Lê’s 2011 album Songs of Freedom is a radical, visionary reimagining of 1960s and 70s rock and soul classics through the lens of global jazz-fusion and world music traditions. Recorded with a star-studded cast of international vocalists and instrumentalists—including Youn Sun Nah, David Linx, Dhafer Youssef, and Bojan Z—the album takes iconic anthems by Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, completely dismantling and reweaving them into vibrant, multi-ethnic tapestries.
The album’s soundscape is dominated by Lê’s explosive, instantly recognizable guitar work—a breathtaking blend of rock power, fluid jazz improvisation, and microtonal bending techniques derived from traditional Vietnamese instruments like the đàn bầu.
