Life is a Journey (2017) by Djabe and Steve Hackett is a captivating, sun-drenched audiophile journey born out of a week-long joint improvisation session in Sardinia. Mixed and engineered with immaculate clarity by bassist Tamás Barabás, the album’s acoustic signature is defined by its organic, wide-open space, natural room reflections, and an effortless, conversational blending of progressive rock, world fusion, and ambient jazz.
Steve Hackett’s lead guitar sits as a luminous central force across the soundstage. His signature Gibson Les Paul tone delivers weeping, chorus-tinged sustain and delicate volume swells that slice cleanly through the mid-range, while his classical nylon-string passages reveal incredible micro-dynamic texture, capturing every delicate fingernail pluck and string slide with tactile proximity. Countering his leads is Attila Égerházi’s electric and acoustic rhythm work, panning wide across the stereo stage to lay down intricate, Mediterranean-flavored chording and ambient strums.
The album’s upper-mids breathe with rich, acoustic warmth and melodic color. Áron Koós-Hutás’s fluid trumpet and flugelhorn lines soar directly down the center channel, backed by shimmering synthesizer pads and subtle electric piano chords that fill the surrounding air without cluttering the spatial separation.
Tamás Barabás’s bass production remains a benchmark of high-fidelity low-end clarity. Hyper-articulate, punchy, and deeply extended, his basslines seamlessly shift from lightning-fast fingerstyle runs to warm, subterranean grooves that ground the ensemble’s improvisational turns with rock-solid authority.
Péter Kaszás’s drum kit, complemented by detailed world percussion accents, provides an energetic, highly tactile rhythmic foundation. Captured with open, natural room ambience, the rhythm section features crisp snare transients, deep kick-drum punch, and sparkling cymbal decay that radiates effortlessly across a spacious soundstage.
