I Am the Moon: II. Ascension (2022)—the second, most soul-saturated installment of the quadrology—is a vibrant, horn-driven celebration of classic R&B, gospel harmony, and uplifting Southern roots-rock. Stepping out from the hypnotic, modal-jazz atmosphere of Crescent, Ascension shines with an immediate, sun-drenched brightness. Susan Tedeschi’s lead vocals are front-and-center, radiating fiery, joyous warmth on tracks like "Playing with My Emotions," backed by lush, three-part vocal arrangements that float seamlessly above the mix. The band's horn section (Ephraim Owens, Kebbi Williams, and Elizabeth Lea) takes on a central role, injecting punchy, brassy accents that lock into a tight, syncopated pocket created by dual drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady alongside bassist Brandon Boone. Derek Trucks’s slide guitar leans into bright, melodic, Allman-esque counter-lines that interlock with Gabe Dixon’s rolling Wurlitzer and acoustic piano, yielding an open, punchy, and uplifting audiophile mix bursting with energy and air.
