I Am the Moon: III. The Fall (2022)—the dramatic, blues-heavy third chapter of the suite—is a dark, melancholic, and deeply atmospheric exploration of heartache, temptation, and emotional gravity. Musically, the album pulls back from the bright horn arrangements of Ascension and leans heavily into gritty, slow-burning blues-rock, gospel minor keys, and heavy soul grooves. Susan Tedeschi delivers some of her most raw and vulnerable vocal performances on tracks like "Somehow," while Mike Mattison takes center stage on the swampy, country-blues ballad "Emmaline." Derek Trucks’s slide guitar carries a stinging, vocal-like bite, using dark, minor-key phrasing and biting sustain that cuts through dense organ swells and pulsing basslines. Gabe Dixon’s Hammond B3 and acoustic piano add a cavernous, church-like resonance, supported by a heavy, deliberate rhythm section that emphasizes deep-pocket grooves and dynamic shifts. The recording features an intimate, tape-saturated warmth, capturing the tense, emotional space of a band navigating the darker turns of the narrative arc.
