Up and Rolling (2019) by North Mississippi Allstars is a loose, sun-baked, and deeply rhythmic celebration of Hill Country blues, funk, and modern Southern psychedelia. Inspired by vintage photographs of 1970s Mississippi, the Dickinson brothers (Luther and Cody) capture a laid-back, porch-jam energy that feels simultaneously archival and fresh. Luther Dickinson’s signature guitar work—a blend of raw, overdriven slide, low-slung thumb-picked blues riffs, and hazy, wah-wah-drenched psych lines—leads the way alongside his gritty, conversational vocals. Cody Dickinson provides a springy, second-line drum pulse, shifting effortlessly between swampy acoustic percussion, washboard, and driving funk kits, alongside deep, resonant bass grooves from Sharisse Norman and Jesse Williams. Featuring guest appearances from Mavis Staples, Jason Isbell, and Duane Betts, the production is warm, analogue-rich, and unhurried—filled with room ambiance, crackling amplifier noise, and an infectious, late-night jam vibe.
