Arrival of the New Elders (2021) by Elephant9 is a sophisticated, deeply atmospheric evolution for the Norwegian power trio, trading their usual hyper-intense, wall-of-sound jams for cinematic composition, space, and hypnotic groove. Keyboardist Ståle Storløkken steps back from blazing Hammond organ runs to center warm Fender Rhodes, Vintage Mellotrons, and swirling analog synths, creating an eerie, film-noir backdrop reminiscent of 70s Miles Davis or Weather Report. Nikolai Hængsle’s rubbery electric basslines and Torstein Lofthus’s razor-sharp, hip-hop- and funk-infused drumming anchor the record with a heavy, subterranean pulse. The album shifts seamlessly between moody ambient-jazz, mutant funk, and dark neo-psychedelia—balancing tension and subtlety to build a mysterious, futuristic sonic world that feels as ritualistic as it is groove-driven.
