Originally commissioned as set-break music for the Grateful Dead’s 2015 Fare Thee Well concerts, Interludes for the Dead is a pristine, instrumental tour de force of hypnotic cosmic-funk and sprawling psychedelic grooves. Recorded live-in-the-studio over just two days, the sonic presentation is defined by a wide, three-dimensional soundstage where Neal Casal’s guitar work—laden with vintage envelope filters, lush tape delays, and envelope-driven wah—weaves effortlessly around Adam MacDougall’s swirling, analog-rich Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, and Hammond B3 textures. Supported by Dan Horne’s deep, elastic basslines and Mark Levy’s airy, uncompressed drum transients, the production carries an exceptionally high dynamic range and warm frequency balance, yielding a velvety, immersive soundscape that lets every delay trail and shimmering cymbal decay bloom naturally without a hint of listening fatigue.
