The Chopin Project (2015) is a fragile, hauntingly intimate reimagining of Frédéric Chopin’s classical compositions, conceived by Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds alongside German-Japanese concert pianist Alice Sara Ott. Distressed by the sterile, hyper-polished nature of modern classical recordings, Arnalds set out to capture the emotional, human vulnerability of the music using close-mic placement, vintage ribbon microphones, and weathered, slightly out-of-tune upright pianos found around Reykjavík. The acoustic footprint is radically mechanical and tactile—every subtle thud of the piano pedals, squeak of the wooden frame, artist's breath, and room reflection is amplified alongside Ott's delicate touch.
