Up All Night (2003) is a greasy, deep-pocket blend of jam-band funk, electro-jazz, and street-level groove that builds directly on the electric foundations of John Scofield's Überjam. Driven by Scofield’s signature Ibanez semi-hollow tone—biting, envelope-filtered, and dripping with gritty overdrive—the album pairs his angular, chromatic lead runs with Avi Bortnick’s rhythm guitar, sample-triggering, and subtle vinyl-scratch textures. The rhythm section of bassist Andy Hess and drummer Adam Deitch lays down heavy, syncopated funk breaks and head-nodding drum-and-bass patterns, while horn arrangements by Rashawn Ross and Eddie Boggess add punchy, soul-jazz stabs. The overall soundscape is raw, kinetic, and atmospheric, seamlessly fusing live, improvised funk solos with modern electronic sampling and deep-bass club energy.
