Music @ Work by The Tragically Hip sounds like a lean, muscular, and high-voltage shot of straight-ahead alt-rock that captures the band at their absolute tightest. Stripping back some of the dark, cavernous space of their late-90s work, the album charges forward with punchy, riff-driven electric guitars, a driving rhythm section, and an infectious, blue-collar swagger. Gord Downie’s vocals are in peak form—sharp, rhythmic, and full of his trademark manic charisma, slinging sharp satire and vivid slice-of-life vignettes over top-heavy grooves. From the driving, metallic churn of the title track to the shimmering, melodic crunch of "Freak Turbulence" and "My Music at Work," the record feels direct, polished, and charged with an energetic, live-wire rock and roll intensity.
