Silversun Pickups’ 2015 fourth studio album, Better Nature, marks a bold, electro-pop-infused evolution of their signature alternative rock sound. Produced by Jacknife Lee (known for his work with U2, R.E.M., and Snow Patrol), the record trades a portion of the band's historical, heavy-fuzz wall of sound for vibrant synths, pulsating electronic grooves, and a punchier, more polished sonic architecture.
Brian Aubert’s distinct, breathy vocals and textured guitar work remain central, but here his guitars often weave alongside—or yield space to—sweeping synth arpeggios and bright electronic textures. Nikki Monninger’s basslines are as melodic and driving as ever, providing a warm, steady anchor beneath the album's glossier production. Drummer Christopher Guanlao brings crisp, energetic urgency to the dynamic rhythm section, while Joe Lester’s keyboard work takes center stage like never before. From the soaring, synth-driven leads of "Nightlight" and "Connection" to the hypnotic, bass-heavy groove of "Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)" and the gritty crunch of "The Pit," Better Nature balances infectious, widescreen hooks with the band's lingering shoegaze sensibilities.
